What is a Discord permissions calculator?

A Discord permissions calculator adds the permissions you pick into the single number Discord stores, the permissions integer, and turns an integer back into a list of permissions. A bot invite link carries that number in its permissions parameter. For example, Administrator is 8.

Discord permission flags and their values (52)

Each permission is one bit of a 64-bit number. A set of permissions is the sum of their decimal values, which is the same as OR-ing their hex values.

Questions

What is Discord permission integer 8?
8 is the Administrator flag (0x8). It grants every permission and ignores channel permission overwrites, so only give it to a bot or role you fully trust.
How do I calculate a Discord permissions integer?
Add the decimal values of the permissions you want, or OR their bits together. Send Messages (2048) plus View Channel (1024) is 3072. Tick the permissions in the calculator and it does the sum for you.
How do I turn a permissions integer back into permissions?
Paste it into the integer box and the calculator lists every flag whose bit is set. By hand, a permission is on when the integer AND the permission's value equals that value.
Where does the permissions integer go in a bot invite link?
In the permissions query parameter of the OAuth2 authorize URL, next to client_id and scope=bot%20applications.commands. The calculator builds that link when you enter your client ID.
Why do Discord permission values break in JavaScript?
JavaScript's bitwise operators work on 32 bits, and many permission flags are larger than that (Send Messages in Threads is 2^38). Use BigInt, or keep the value as a string, when you combine or test permissions in code.
